Join Costa Award-winning author of Asha & the Spirit Bird and Tamarind & the Star of Ishta, Jasbinder Bilan, for this masterclass in magical creative writing. Students will learn how the Indian myths of Jasbinder’s childhood inspire her books and how they can weave the magic of myths into their own storytelling, just as she has done in her thrilling new adventure, Aarti & the Blue Gods.
According to family stories, Jasbinder was born in a stable in the foothills of the Himalayas. Her family moved to Nottingham when she was a child and they kept India alive by telling funny stories of their life on their farm with a grumpy camel and a monkey called Oma. It was the incredible bond with her grandmother which was the inspiration for Costa Children’s Book Award-winning Asha & the Spirit Bird in 2019 which was also nominated for the Carnegie Medal, the Jhalak Prize and the Waterstones Book Prize. Her second novel Tamarind & the Star of Ishta won the Indie Children’s Book Award and was nominated for the Blue Peter Book Prize.
