The Costa Children’s Book Award winner Hilary McKay chats with the Children’s Books Editor from The Sunday Times Nicolette Jones about her World War One classic The Skylark’s War.

Hilary McKay grew up in a big family in a small house in Lincolnshire where ‘reading was her first great escape.’ She studied Zoology and Botany (officially) and English Literature (unofficially) and worked as a biochemist but she always wanted to write. Hilary’s first novel The Exiles won The Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize and she has gone on to win almost every major writing prize. She says the best thing about being an author is receiving letters from children.
