David Almond is a giant of children’s literature. The author of the Carnegie Medal-winning Skellig among so many classics, David introduces his latest graphic novel Joe Quinn’s Poltergeist and discusses the themes in his books, his characters, real and imagined, and his inspirations with Bex Lindsay from Fun Kids Radio.

David Almond trained as a teacher and taught at primary schools, schools for children with special needs and adult literacy centres before he started to write. His first novel for adults was rejected by every UK publisher. He published two collections of short stories with a small press before he started work on Skellig which was published to immediate acclaim in 1998 and won both the Carnegie Medal and the Whitbread Children’s Book Award. He has since gone on to win every major children’s writing prize for his other books including Kit’s Wilderness, The Savage, My Dad’s a Birdman, The Boy Who Swam with Piranhas, Mouse Bird Snake Wolf, A Song for Ella Gray, The Colour of the Sun and  The Dam, as well as a prequel to Skellig, My Name is Mina. As a child he dreamed of playing for Newcastle United and is still waiting for the call!
