Nick Sharratt is one of Britain’s best-known children’s book illustrators, with over 200 titles to his name. He writes and illustrates his own books, and has also collaborated with renowned authors like Julia Donaldson and Jacqueline Wilson. His books have won numerous awards, including the Red House Children’s Book Award and the Smarties Book Prize, and have sold millions of copies. The Tracy Beaker books by Jacqueline Wilson havereached sales of over 30 million in the UK alone. Nick first knew he wanted to be a professional illustrator when the husband of one of his teachers offered him five pounds to draw a picture similar to one he had displayed in the school hall. Before becoming a full-time illustrator, Nick designed sweet packets and cake boxes, and food is still one of his favourite subjects. He finds pirates and cats very easy to draw, but gerbils and orchestras are a bit trickier.
